What is ERCP?

ERCP is a specialised endoscopic procedure that combines endoscopy with X-ray imaging to examine and treat problems in the bile ducts and pancreatic duct. A side-viewing endoscope (duodenoscope) is passed through the mouth to the duodenum, where the bile and pancreatic ducts open.

When is ERCP needed?

  • Removal of bile duct stones (choledocholithiasis)
  • Treatment of bile duct strictures or blockages
  • Placement of stents to relieve obstructive jaundice
  • Investigation and treatment of pancreatic duct disorders
  • Management of bile leaks following surgery
  • Sphincterotomy for sphincter of Oddi dysfunction

The Procedure

ERCP is performed under general anaesthesia or deep sedation. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity. You will usually stay in hospital overnight for monitoring following ERCP.

Important Information

ERCP carries a small risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), which occurs in approximately 3-5% of cases. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits with you before the procedure.
